The legislation requires all Queensland homes to have interconnected, photoelectric smoke alarms. This means when one alarm detects smoke, all alarms in the property will sound simultaneously. They must be installed in every bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms, and on every level of the home.
You must have photoelectric smoke alarms, which are more effective at detecting smouldering fires. All alarms must be interconnected and either hardwired to the home’s electricity supply or powered by a sealed, 10-year lithium battery.
The deadlines are staggered. For all properties being sold or leased, compliance was required from 1 January 2022. For all other owner-occupied homes, all properties must be compliant by 1 January 2027. We strongly recommend upgrading well before the final deadline to ensure your family is protected.
Only if they are the 10-year sealed lithium battery type. However, a licensed electrician is required for all hardwired smoke alarm installations. We highly recommend using a professional for all installations to ensure the alarms are placed correctly according to legislation, function as a system, and provide you with a certificate of compliance.
Upgrading is not just about meeting a legal requirement; it’s about life safety. Interconnected photoelectric alarms provide the earliest possible warning of a fire, especially for sleeping occupants in different parts of the house. This significantly increases the time your family has to escape safely.
