Is Your Air-Con Ready For The Mackay Heat? A Pre-Summer Check-Up

The humidity starts to climb, the air gets thick, and the familiar intensity of the build-up signals that summer is just around the corner.

If you've lived through a Mackay summer you know exactly what comes next — and you also know that the worst possible time to discover your air-conditioner isn't coping is the first 35°C day in December. Every year we get a rush of breakdown calls in the first serious week of heat, almost all of them from systems that hadn't been serviced since the last one.

A pre-summer check-up is the cheapest insurance you can buy. Here's what's worth doing before the build-up really bites.

1. Clean or replace your filters

This is the single biggest thing you can do yourself. Our wet season pushes dust, pollen and moisture through your system, and a clogged filter chokes airflow — making the unit work harder, cool less and cost more to run. Pop the front cover, slide the filters out, wash them in warm water, and let them dry completely before refitting.

2. Check the outdoor unit

Clear leaves, grass clippings and garden growth from around the outdoor condenser. It needs open airflow to dump heat. If it's boxed in by a hedge or shed wall, it will struggle all summer.

3. Listen and smell

Rattles, grinding or a musty smell when the system starts up are all early warnings. A musty odour usually means mould in the coils or drain — common in our humidity, and something worth having professionally cleaned rather than ignored.

4. Watch for weak or warm airflow

If the system runs but the room never quite gets there, you may be low on refrigerant or have a failing component. Running a struggling unit all summer often turns a small repair into a replacement.

5. Book a professional service

We recommend a professional service at least once a year, ideally before summer. A proper service includes a deep clean and disinfect of the coils and drain, refrigerant and electrical checks, and a full performance test. The benefits stack up:

  • Improved efficiency — removing built-up dirt restores unrestricted airflow and reduces strain on the unit.
  • Lower energy costs — a clean, well-maintained system uses less power for better cooling.
  • Increased longevity — regular maintenance is the best way to extend the life of your unit and avoid costly breakdowns.
  • Better air quality — cleaning and disinfecting protects against airborne allergens and bacteria.

Don't forget the switchboard

Summer isn't just hard on your air-con. Electricity demand surges with the heat and humidity, and an older switchboard without modern safety switches is a genuine risk. If yours still has ceramic fuses, it's worth an assessment before you add more cooling load to it.

Want it sorted properly? Our Arctick-licensed team services air-conditioning across Mackay and the Whitsundays — and we'd much rather see you in October than on the hottest day of the year.
